How Long Does a Steel Beam Take to Make and Fit?
The steel itself is usually the quick part — most domestic beams are fabricated in days. Here's the realistic timeline from engineer's drawing to installed beam, and what actually causes delays.

People often assume the steel is the long pole in the tent. It usually isn't. For a typical domestic beam, fabrication is measured in days — it's the steps around it that set the real timeline.
The realistic sequence
- Engineer's calculations and drawing. The step to start early, because nothing else can begin without it. Lead time depends on the engineer's workload.
- Building regulations application. Runs in parallel — submit as soon as you have calculations.
- Fabrication. Once we have the drawing we cut to length, drill for the connections, weld on cleats or base plates, and apply the finish. Most straightforward domestic beams are turned around in a matter of days.
- Delivery. To your site, or your builder's yard.
- Installation. Your builder props the opening, installs the beam onto its padstones or posts, and building control inspects before anything is covered up.
What actually adds time
- Waiting on calculations. By far the most common delay. Get the engineer booked before you need them.
- Galvanising. Hot-dip galvanising happens off site in batches, so it adds turnaround compared with a primed finish. Worth it where the steel is exposed to weather — tell us the environment and we'll advise.
- Complex connections. A single beam is quick. A goalpost frame with posts, base plates and multiple bolted connections takes longer to detail and make.
- Changes after fabrication. Once steel is cut and drilled to a drawing, a layout change usually means re-making it. This is why settling the design first pays.
- Access and lifting. A heavy beam going into a tight terrace or an upper floor may need more planning, more hands, or lifting equipment.
How to keep it moving
The single biggest thing you can do is get the structural engineer engaged early and the drawing finalised before you start knocking anything down. Send us the drawing as soon as it's signed off, and the steel can be in progress while building control does its part.

Can you go faster if it's urgent? Tell us the date you need it on site. Straightforward beams can often be prioritised — we'd rather know the constraint up front than discover it late.
Can I order the steel before the engineer's drawing? We'd strongly advise against it. Without the calculations you don't know the section, the length or the connections — and steel made to a guess is steel made twice.
